Crowns and Onlays
Dental Crowns in Portland, OR
A dental crown, also sometimes called a ‘cap,’ is used to restore and protect a tooth that has been severely damaged, or cracked. A crown strengthen the tooth mechanically by acting as a helmet around and over the tooth. The reason a crown is sometimes needed over fillings is that if the volume of damage to the tooth is large enough, a newer, larger filling will add additional mechanical stress and cause fracture of the tooth.
Ceramic Onlays
Another type of restoration offered at Pinecone Dental Care is called an “onlay.” Ceramic onlays are intricate all-ceramic dental restorations that replicate the similar mechanical protection and stress reduction offered by a crown, but less healthy tooth structure is removed. This is made possible by advancements in both dental adhesives and dental ceramics over the past 50 years. Dr. Zhu will discuss with you in detail if an onlay or a crown will be recommended in your situation. Call our office at (503) 777-2284 to schedule a consultation.
