This patient came to us with broken roots, fractured teeth, decay, and several missing teeth. She has been unhappy with her smile for years. Several back teeth were completely destroyed from years of excessive wear. A front and center tooth had its root snapped under the bone from the excessive forces. We used dental implants to replace the back teeth that couldn't be restored, and a bridge to replace the broken front tooth. Veneers and crowns rebuilt the remaining teeth to round out a full bright smile.
Older patients often arrive with decades of piecemeal dentistry — work done well, but done at different times by different hands. The subtle mismatches between those old restorations make put in new restoration very difficult. The usual choice is either a jarring disharmony in the final aesthetics, or completely rebuild everything to match. This patient wasn't a fan for either option, so instead of trying to match individual teeth, I worked on the harmony of the smile as a whole. The most counterintuitive decision here was that the 5 new crowns were deliberately not in the same shade. We intentionally built in natural digressions that is perfectly imperfect. This is what made this a refresh rather than a rebuild, a seamless blend.
This patient had been suffering quietly with her smile for decades before she ever raised it with me. Her teeth has always been crooked, discolored, and many dentist said braces is the only way. Nobody asked her what she wanted. Instead, we did 6 veneers/crowns, and within 2 appointments over 2 weeks, we were able to achieve this result. The change was dramatic enough that her reaction was immediate: "I wish I had done this way earlier."
